We have the nicest neighbor who owns the place just up the road from us. His name is Woody, and he is the picture of an old farmer- tall, thin, and methodical. The whole family just loves him.
Woody likes to share what grows in his garden. I think he still plants what he did when he had a house full of kids.
Today, Woody brought us THREE huge watermelon and this cantelope. Sadly,we were not the first to enjoy the delicious fruit.
I don’t know if I am crazy, but I washed it and just cut around the part shared by the animal. Then I chunked it up for the family. the goats and chickens all got to indulge in melon skins and an extra bit of flesh for once. Nothing went to waste!
It’s hard to believe that winter is almost here, and the abundance of fresh melons will be over. I have been freezing all the extra melons to try to capture some of this summer feeling.
We are so thankful for such a great neighbor as Woody.
What is crazy is not you cutting around a funny spot on a melon, it is all the decent food most Americans waste every day.
